Hi,
V are planning on a trip to Andaman. I notice that you stayed at YMCA. Could you please let me know how the place of stay was? And also what was the cost and the contact details of YMCA? How many weeks prior would you be expected to book?
Thank you,
Joan.
@joan
I didn’t stay at YMCA , sorry. It was an hostel run by my company. So I could get a booking there.
I received a few mails and queries about my trip to Andaman, so I thought I would put in a few things here. I went in there with wife in September. The best time to be in Andaman is when it is not raining – there is no cold season there and heat is tolerable (unlike mainland India). During rains flights frequently get cancelled and you don’t want fly all the way from Calcutta or Madras and plane going back without landing. Flights are costly but still worth it. Ships sound romantic but they are basic, take time, are nearly as expensive as flights and water is turbulent in Bay of Bengal. There are no pre-paid taxi/rickshaws at airport and police/tourist office are of no help. Get some fare estimates from local passengers and then negotiate with taxi guy. Don’t mind extra 5-10 rupees extra since tourism is the only business there. Getting transport from hotel is an option but you won’t be saving any money – in fact paying more.
There are no star hotels – apart from handful. All hotels are costly given the services they give. I visited a few big name hotels and found some of them are pretty disgusting. Just look for cleanliness – the only time you would spend in hotel would be when you come back to sleep. All harbour cruises are priced same and use more or less same kind of boats. There are no reserved seats – sit wherever you want. If you plan to go to Havelock or Neil Islands – go to jetty early – ships get booked quickly. Usually booking in advance is not required unless you are travelling in peak tourist season. Internet connectivity is poor there, carry special meals/requirements/medicines with you from mainland – you may not get them in islands. Carry mosquito repellant creams like Odomos. Stick to South Indian foods if you can – you would get them fresh and hot. If you are buying souvenirs there – remember those are nearly almost produced in Tamil Nadu/Bengal.
