Back on earth!!

Yeah!!!!!
India has a woman president finally. We did what most of so-called white, developed countries could not. Seems like it’s the golden era for our womenfolk. Sunita Williams in space, Pratibha Patil in Raisina Hills, Shilpa Shetty in Big Brother, and so on and so forth (actually, I ran out of names).
Media and society in general have been telling us that these women have proved once again that Indian women are second to none. Well the point is proved, but to whom exactly?
Who in world cares about another woman in space.Velentina Tereshkova has been-there-done-that back in 1963, which is a cool 44 years ago. A woman president? There have been more than 3 dozen women presidents (or heads of state) in over two dozen countries, including many which are poorer and socially more backward than us, before this.
And winning the Big Brother! Well I just don’t want to say anything about it. If you have seen what it is, you know what I mean.
It is very easy to please Indians. Talk about our glorious history, our heroes, our great society and tolerance, our great cricket team,or even our great economic progress.
Well, we immediately forgive and forget.
Wake up! Indian women. You have a looooooooooooooooong way to go before you can honestly start feeling proud. And to be successful you need to make yourself popular in Western media or earn tonnes of money. Our society will remain as mean and cruel it has been for ages. No Pratibha or Shilpa will make any difference. They got where did using crutches donated by others. Sunita most certainly will not, since she is no more an Indian. She took American crutches as soon she could. Switzerland gave women the right to vote in 1971, India in 1952. But Swiss women are atleast 200 years better off than their Indian counterparts.
By the way, I was so happy when Sunita reached earth and Pratibha was declared our new president. The interview with stupid street people, who knew nothing about current affairs but still kept saying they were so proud (just to be on TV), were driving me crazy. Now I breathe easy.
And wait till another woman decides to prove that Indian women are second to none.
