My dream house
Aug 7th, 2007 by Virendra
We will be moving into our own house by September. I feared my parents would be upset when I broke the news to them, but my mother seemed thrilled to hear this. Perhaps she was waiting for us to leave. Two lazy mongers out of her home will mean lesser work for her. That is a different story altogether. So the weekends are going miserably for the two of us. No sleeping till late afternoon on weekends. A huge list of things to buy – furniture, mattresses, curtains, cooking gas, ceiling fans, fancy lights and the list goes on without an end in sight.
Most of the experiences so far have been nightmares. Most of the small things I have always taken for granted have now become difficult challenges. Unmarried people around the world, try purchasing a kilo of rice and you will understand my rant. Parmal, sela, basmati, ghasmati, blah blah varieties will haunt you. Now extrapolate the same for purchasing curtains. Not a mere headache, it is a potential flashpoint leading to divorce!
Even when you are done purchasing, try getting hold of a plumber or an electrician on a weekend. They are always booked. Fortunately, my dad is a mechanical engineer and my brother an electrical engineer. Big drooling moistened eyes are enough to get jobs done. But since they are engineers, they are not that good. And if I try my own hands on anything, it is bound to be a disaster and I am not insured for much.
But me and wife are determined. In September we will be gone to our own home. It doesn’t matter if all plumbing is leaking, it doesn’t matter if our house is a sample of how not to buy curtains, it doesn’t matter if any electrical socket in house can kill Godzilla, it doesn’t matter if I am left pennyless and shoeless running after DDA/MCD/MTNL/Indane.
Wish me luck 🙁
