Working idly

Companies pay for getting work done. That they pay more to managers, who just sit around idly, is another thing. But anyway, to be fair, I ought to work if my company hired me for that. Fortunately, India is a free country and we are allowed to remain free, even in office hours. I personally feel that we need amendments in our labour laws. All the employees should be free during the work hours. Yes sir, free. Free as in free to do anything – speech, not beer. Cost wise, you are already free. Check your bank balance if you do not believe me.
So a free atmosphere works wonders for companies and employees’ personal fortune. Let me see –
- You use the internet, tea/coffee, bathrooms, work desks (while idling you don’t sit on chairs, desks are there for that) which adds up to increase your CTC for your work. Tea is very good for your metabolism, you know. What with all the antioxidants and stuff.
- You remain active moving about others’ desk and hence healthy. Keep sitting in the chair for a long time and you face many back/neck problem. This will burden your medical bills as well, which otherwise can be prepared for a 7% commission. By the way, you don’t happen to know any chemist who charges a lower commission, do you?
- Chatting around with buddies sharpens your PR and communication skills, which will eventually help you in dealing with the clients and your work. Additionally, you get to know about new job openings, who’s going onsite, wh’s that cute new girl on the third floor, et al.
- You can rant on about another pathetic performance by Indian -put any sport here- team, another headache movie, how you have not been sent onsite for the past three years and how you keep getting low pay here (but still stick to the same company for some reason). This will help vent your anger and allow you to concentrate on your work.
- If you don’t sit idly in office hours, what will you do in your extended hours?
All in all, all work and no idleness, makes you lose the edge. So long friends, I think I should go back to opening a dozen black and white unix terminal sessions. The earlier ones have just disconnected for lack of activity. My boss is watching me and my performance review is still pending.

ya buddy.. as usual u r grt…. u don’t remember me…. we shared the same room (not the same bed)…. u forget to mention one thing… one should keep moving here and there and anywhere in the office… but should move fast and with some papers (no matter whether it contains a love letter… or a change request from client)… so that the BOSS always feels that u r working.. that to be very hard…
