I hired a SUV for family to visit Agra. We started at morning 7AM from New Delhi and we realised we should have started at least a couple of hours earlier, given the huge rush of traffic at state border. We took NH2 (or GT Road or Mathura Road), but presently there is a high speed tollway from Delhi-Noida-Greater Noida which reduces travel time. We first visited Sikandara which has mausoleum of Akbar, the third (and arguably the most famous) Mughal emperor, followed by the Agra fort, the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri. Agra Fort, Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri are part of UN World Heritage. Taj Mahal is mausoleum for Mumtaj Mahal, the last wife of fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (who loved constructing grand buildings). Fatehpur Sikri was supposed to be the new Mughal capital but was abandoned after few years due to lack of water and high heats in the area. It is now a ghost royal city. We completed the journey in a day but ideally we should have spent two days there – we rushed some of the places and were thoroughly exhausted by the end.
